Obituary for
Schick Martha (Berner)
Martha Schick passed away peacefully with family by her side at the age of 89.
Martha was born October 6, 1927 to Adolf and Lydia (nee Wagner) Berner on a farm near Lorlie. She was the youngest of nine children. She attended Southview School, until she completed Grade 8, the year that her dad died.
Martha worked as a hired hand for her sister Olga when she was 14 years old. When she turned 16, she went to Regina and worked there for two years.
Martha met Elmer Schick during her school years. They were married October 5, 1947 in a small country church called Lake Mona. They were blessed with five children – Barry, Garth, Timothy, Vincent, and a daughter Heather.
Martha loved living on the farm. She took pride in keeping the yard neatly groomed and proudly showed off pictures of her flower gardens. She grew a huge vegetable garden and recruited her children to help with the harvest (whether they liked it or not). She spent hours canning and freezing this harvest – the cool room and freezer were always full of the bounty of the harvest.
During their younger years, Elmer and Martha spent many hours square dancing. Elmer and Martha remained on the farm until they retired in 1994 and moved to Melville in May of 1995.
Martha became an active member of the First United Church Women. She also enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard and bingo during her retirement years. She loved going for coffee with her friends.
Martha’s children and grandchildren were so special to her. She created individual photo albums for EACH member of the family, young and old. This was no easy feat, if anyone remembered that she was not so good with the camera.
Elmer and Martha moved to the Melville Legion Manor in 2010, then Elmer moved into St. Paul Lutheran Home in 2012. When her mobility started failing in 2014, Martha moved to Seventh & Main Care Home. Martha had a heart attack in the summer of 2016 and could not return to Seventh & Main, so she moved into a long term care home. She remained in St. Paul Lutheran Home until God called her home on March 22, 2017.
