Audrey Mae Akerman was born in Melville in 1930 to Adolph and Marjorie (Berg) Reinson, spending her childhood in Birmingham, SK, and area. Being the oldest of eight children, she started working for income to help with raising the family after the seventh grade, tending to her nearby relatives and their farmhouse. Audrey enjoyed horseback riding and caring for the farm animals.

In her 20s, Audrey moved to Melville, met John (Jack) Richard Akerman and they married in 1955. They had two children, Mark John, and Richard (Rick) James. Audrey was a very caring mother and knew how to appropriately use her wooden spoon, guiding her boys ‘beyond baking’. She was also a loving grandmother to all her grandchildren, participating in and nurturing in their development in their early years. Audrey especially enjoyed sharing her recipes and cooking skills with them, and everyone agreed she made the best buns!

Audrey spent most of her life taking care of her family. In her 50s, she worked for several years at St. Paul Lutheran Home in the kitchen, preparing meals for the residents. She fondly recalled working at the Home and the fun she had there. After retirement, Audrey enjoyed regularly playing bingo with her ‘bingo buddies’, travelling to other towns for bingo nights. She was also up to playing Scrabble with anyone who dared, as she usually was the winner.

In her later years, Audrey cherished the frequent calls and visits from her granddaughters and grandson and seeing her great-grandchildren. She was proud of their accomplishments and their progress in life. She was also proud of living independently until the age of 91 and appreciated the people who helped take care of her yard and home.

Special thanks go to the wonderful people at St. Paul Lutheran Home and St. Peter’s Hospital who cared for her and brought her happiness in her final year. Audrey passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at the age of 92 years.

Audrey was predeceased by her husband, Jack; son Rick; brother Bob; and sisters Ivy and Donna.

Interment will take place at the Melville Cemetery, 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 12, 2023, followed by a gathering of family and friends at the Classic Inn Lounge from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m.
