Eileen (nee Bugoy) Liebrecht, widow of the late Lawrence Liebrecht, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Home, Melville, with her family by her side. She was 91 years of age.

Eileen was born on the family farm by Otthon, SK, June 16, 1931, to Martha and Michael Bugoy; she was the youngest with 12 siblings - five brothers and five sisters, one sibling who died in Poland before immigrating to Canada with their parents and another in infancy. Eileen was raised on the family farm and attended school in Otthon. She moved to Yorkton for Grades 9 to 12, completing her education at Yorkton Collegiate. Eileen stayed in Yorkton to pursue her nursing career. After a three-year program, she graduated as a registered nurse in 1953. Following graduation, she was employed at the Yorkton Union Hospital as a general duty nurse and relief supervisor.

Eileen met the love of her life, Lawrence, and after a courtship and starting her nursing career, they were married July 24, 1954; their marriage was blessed with two children, a son and daughter. They moved to Melville in August 1956, and she began working at St. Peter’s Hospital as general duty nurse. Eileen left nursing in 1957 for several years while the children were born and then worked part-time for many years while the children were growing up. In 1970 she became full-time evening supervisor, which she held for many years. She decided to go part-time in 1990 and retired in 1994. Eileen’s dedication and love of nursing was personified when her daughter also decided to make nursing her chosen profession.

Mom was an incredible homemaker; the house was always spotless, she was a good cook and great baker, all the while managing a huge garden and all the work that entailed. She was a wonderful mother and role model and a fantastic grandmother. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. Mom also loved her pets and all of ours as well.

Mom and Dad both enjoyed travelling; they’d been to Europe and numerous places in the US, as well as Canada.

Eileen always took pride in her appearance. She was always able to carve out an hour a week for her loved hair appointments, which she continued up until the last week of her life. She was always beautifully dressed when not in uniform.

Eileen retired from her beloved nursing career after Lawrence passed away in 1993. She remained in the house they loved until 2013, when she moved across the street to Caleb Village, where she lived for six years. Eileen moved to St. Paul Lutheran Home in June of 2019.

Eileen was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Melville, where she served on council from 1995 to 1997, was on altar guild and assisted with lunches at funerals. Her hobbies included travelling, playing cards, doing knitting and petit point, reading, baking and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Eileen was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, on September 1, 1993; her parents; brothers Walter in infancy, Clements, Alfonse, Hy, Leslie and Ben; and sisters Sophie, Walterina, Monica, Stella and Pauline. She leaves to cherish her memory: Sheldon (Kerry) of Winnipeg, and their children, Brenna (Steve Dueck), Chelsea and Tessa, and Kellie (Troy Navitka), Hayden and Finnley, all of Winnipeg, and Cheryl (Scott) Dales of Melville and their children, Kylan (Eili Tytlandsvik) of Weyburn, and Kristie (Todd Walker) of Souris, MB; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A Nurse’s Prayer

Give me strength and wisdom
When others need my touch
A soothing word to speak to them
Their hearts yearn for so much
Give me joy and laughter
To lift a weary soul
Pour in me compassion
To make the broken whole
Give me gentle, healing hands
For those left in my care
A blessing to those who need me,
This is a nurse’s prayer.
