It is with sadness that the family of Judith (Judy) Serfas announces her passing on Saturday, April 8, 2023.

Judith (nee Dengler) Serfas was born Sunday, March 3, 1940, at the Cupar Hospital, youngest daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (nee Fahlman) Dengler. She was baptised and received her first Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Southey, SK. Judith was raised on a mixed family farm in the Earl Grey, SK, area. She attended Frudenthal School for her elementary/middle school education. Growing up during the 1940s/50s on the farm meant a daily regiment of farm chores tied to the passing seasons surrounded by nature. Her happiest memories were of helping her father with the livestock and helping bring in the harvest. She had a life-long love of animals, be it dogs or cats, or the baby fawn named Bambi she raised, or the horse she rode to school. Judy was also a self-taught, and talented, accordion player who loved playing polka music. Judy finished her formal education in Regina, SK. Her first job was working in a hardware store in Regina. After Judy completed her nurses’ aide course, she was employed at Regina General Hospital from 1959 until 1966.

Judy loved to travel and travelled across the USA before she married. In the fall of 1965, she met Rudolph Serfas, whom she married on Saturday, July 2, 1966, in Regina, SK. Her marriage produced three sons: Frank (1967), Micheal (1969) and Glen (1972). Judy was in her element as farm housewife, raising her sons and caring for her husband, while also milking cows to sell the cream, raising chickens and pigs, planting and tending to large gardens typical of the era, which led, like clockwork every year, to canning and preserving of all manner of vegetables and fruits.

On Tuesday, June 3, 1980, Judy’s husband died, which was the start of the next phase of her life as a single mother raising her three sons. In 1980, she planned and oversaw extensive farm house and building renovations and improvements. Judy also introduced her sons to her love of travelling during the summers of 1981 through 1984, visiting many relatives and historical points of interest, from Brandon, MB, to Edmonton, AB, and to Richmond/Vancouver, BC.

In 1986, Judy turned over the family grain farm to her son Frank, in which she assisted in its operation until 2010. In 1995, Frank and Glen expanded the farm into a cattle operation into which Judy had extensive input. From 1988 until the early 2000s, Judy assisted her best friend Lola in running a graduation and wedding gown, tuxedo/formal wear store in Yorkton, SK. Judy took great pleasure and pride in the work she did, in a very exacting and demanding service industry. This work allowed her to work closely with “special daughter” Larienne, with whom she shared a close lifelong bond. After Judy's formal working career was over, she travelled to Las Vegas and Florida.

Because Judy read extensively and followed current affairs on TV, she was well informed. And with that, she could be very opinionated on many subjects. She was a 72-year-long fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, so much so, she bought one of the first Saskatchewan Roughriders memberships sold; she maintained that membership for over 44 years. She also cheered on the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos for many decades. In June of 2021, Judy moved into St. Paul Lutheran Home, where she made many friends and resided until her passing.

Judith was predeceased by her husband, Rudolph; her parents, Frank and Elizabeth Dengler; an infant son, Albert Serfas; and brother-in-law Harry Soroka. She will be lovingly remembered by three sons, Frank (Carrie), Michael (Marna) and Glen (Tammy); sister Denise Soroka; and several nephews and nieces.

The family thanks the staff of St. Paul Lutheran Home for the care given her over the past 22 months.
