James (Jim) Sawchin went to his eternal home on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at St. Peter’s Hospital, Melville, SK, at the age of 91 years.

Jim Sawchin was born in the Lorlie area on April 9, 1931, to John and Mary (nee Filko) Sawchin. He received his education at Southview School. He started farming in 1956 with his brother, Al Sawchin.

Jim married Virginia (Janet) Stradeski from the Grayson area. He loved music and was well known for his skills on a violin; he played in a band called Western Melody Makers with other family members. He loved farming, welding and socializing with friends and family. Jim always loved helping his neighbours with repairs or anything he could do for them. On August 21, 1993, his beloved wife, Janet, went to be with our Lord. Although he spent time with his family, he was sad and lonely without her.

His childhood friend Esther Dales (nee Murfin) had also lost her spouse. Jim and Esther renewed their friendship and started meeting for coffee and other social activities. In April of 1995, they married. Esther encouraged Jim to revive his music skills, and they began entertaining with a group called Sonshine Gospel Singers; they spent much of their time travelling with the group. Jim enjoyed time with his first family and also loved Esther’s family. He enjoyed spending time with her youngest grandchildren, Janelle and Mitchell. They were very young when their natural grandfather passed away so Jim always felt that they were his grandchildren. Sadly, on August 4, 2011, Esther also went home to our Lord. Once again, Jim was sad and lonely.

He eventually became friends with his neighbour, Evelyn Halushka. Their friendship grew to romance, and in 2012 they became partners and spent most of their time together. As Jim’s health started deteriorating, Evelyn took on the role of his caregiver. She always made sure that he ate right and got his medication correctly. When Jim became hospitalized in early October, she remained constantly by his side sleeping on a cot in his room making sure that he was comfortable.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary; his first wife, Janet and his second wife, Esther; his brother, Al, whom he greatly missed and often dreamed about; as well as numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Jim leaves to lovingly remember him: his three children, Richard (Suzy) Sawchin, Karen Stonechild and Tyrone (Suzanne) Sawchin; five grandchildren, Gina (Craig) Leader, Naiomi Henry, James Sawchin (Taylor Bye), Bryant Stonechild and Amanda Stonechild; sisters Joan Sparks and Marge Ortynski; his partner, Evelyn Halushka; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

His memory will live on in our hearts!
