Elfrieda Schmidt of Neudorf, SK, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years on Friday, October 21, 2022, (19 days after Arthur, her husband of 75 years, passed away).
Elfrieda was born on May 30, 1928, to August and Katherine Leier in Killaly, SK. Elfrieda grew up on the Leier family farm and attended Reimer School and Christ Lutheran Church. Elfrieda married Arthur Schmidt on August 24, 1947, at Christ Lutheran Church in Neudorf, and they took over the family farm that same year. They moved to Neudorf in 1983 but continued to farm. Elfrieda and Arthur had three children, Barry, Calvin and Beverly.
Elfrieda and Arthur enjoyed spending time with family and friends celebrating special occasions and playing cards, bingo and shuffleboard. Elfrieda enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening and working on the farm. During the busy times on the farm, she happily prepared and drove meals out to the field, including cake or pie and ice cream on special occasions. She was recognized for her abundance of canning, baking, cooking, sewing, crocheting, embroidering, quilting and many other hobbies. Elfrieda and Arthur spent many winter hours stitching quilts and doing puzzles together. Elfrieda taught Sunday School for many years, served as treasurer and caterer for the Evangelical Lutheran Church Women at Christ Lutheran Church and, until just a few years ago, served as treasurer for the Neudorf Golden Sunset Club. Elfrieda and Arthur proudly celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this past summer.
Elfrieda is survived by her son, Calvin; daughter Bev (Doug); daughter-in-law Beatrice; four grandchildren, Melanie (Gary), Lisa (Mike), Mackenzie and Fraser; three great-grandchildren, Bree, Callie and Carter; and brother Edward (Evelyn) Leier. Elfrieda was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Schmidt; her parents, August and Katherine Leier; son Barry Schmidt; and siblings Emma Adolph, Ernest Leier, Otto Leier, Anne Golem and Christine Koch.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Esterhazy Centennial Special Care Home for their compassionate care of Elfrieda in her last seven and a half weeks.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Neudorf. Interment will take place in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Neudorf.
