Heaven opened its gates and welcomed our gentle soul, Edna Mae Shepherd (nee Carson), on Sunday, February 13, 2022, when she passed away peacefully at the Whitewood Community Health Centre. She was 86 years of age.

It was no surprise that she would join the Lord on a Sunday, as her faith was important to Edna all her life. She could be seen walking weekly to St. Mary’s Anglican Church to prepare for the Sunday gathering and be present for the service. This continued until her illness in the last few years prohibited her from being there.

Edna was born July 11, 1935. She was adopted by Samuel and Mary (nee Johnston) Carson to join with siblings Stanley, Mary ‘Tootsie’ and Ruby. In 1956 she married John Henry (Jack) Shepherd, who farmed northwest of Whitewood, son of Fredrick H. and Mary Jane Shepherd.

Jack and Edna had no children, but there was not a child who did not receive the love and compassion of the loving couple. Their nieces and nephews were always welcome at their farm home and spent many enjoyable hours pail feeding calves, riding the stone boat and playing on the stacks of square bales. In later years, Edna’s face would light up when she saw her many nieces and nephews and their children.

Edna prided herself in being a good wife, maintaining an immaculately tidy home while taking her part in the farm chores of separating the cows’ milk and churning butter, amongst the many other farm chores, in addition to baking and cooking. Her hobbies included crocheting, quilting and knitting.

Edna was also a dedicated community member. Many gatherings of friends and neighbours were held in her home for the Scissors Creek Auxiliary, of whom she was a member, as well as when family met to celebrate together over a delicious meal and a game of cards.

In 1985, Jack and Edna moved to town to settle happily in their bungalow on Balfour Street, where they lived at the time of Jack’s passing. Edna loved to visit and enjoyed tea and coffee with her friends and acquaintances. Following Jack’s passing, the two sisters-in-law (Edna and Lil) became daily companions.

Lil cared for Edna as long as she could until, unfortunately, Edna’s onset of dementia increased, warranting more care. With reluctance by her family members, she was relocated to the Whitewood nursing home, where she received the support needed for her health condition. The staff gave her wonderful support, and she always had a smile, waiting for when her great-niece Beth arrived at work.

Both Jack and Edna served on the vestry at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, and Edna was an active member of the Anglican Church Women’s auxiliary, was representative of the Forrest Farm Memorial Fund and enjoyed working with the Scissors Creek Auxiliary, sponsoring the Candy Stripers at Whitewood Hospital during that period of time.

Edna loved to garden, feed the birds, golf, curl, enjoyed cards at the Harmony Club and also later in the nursing home; she especially enjoyed coffee or tea with her friends, relatives and acquaintances. The many hours spent visiting with her sister-in-law Lil and especially their drives in the countryside were enjoyed and even more so when she relocated to the Whitewood Community Health Centre, prior to the isolation from COVID-19.

Edna was predeceased by her husband, Jack; siblings Stanley (Nellie) Carson, Mary (John) McBeth and Ruby (Norman) McDonald; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Raymond (Phyllis) Shepherd, Audrey (Earl) Carson, Doreen (Earl) Carson and Robert Shepherd; nephews and nieces and in-laws Mervin Carson, Gordon McDonald, David (Joanne) Shepherd, Gary Frier, Sue Shepherd, Maxine (nee Carson) Downes, Bob Johnson and Cliff Ashfield (Jr.); a great-nephew (Shirley Johnson’s son), Trevor Kalaman, and Baby Norwig.

Edna is survived by sister-in-law Lillian (Robert) Shepherd; nieces and nephews Donnelda (Mervin) Carson, Emmie (McDonald) Edey, Doug (Leslie) McDonald, Don (Pat) McDonald, Phyllis Frier, Sandra (Walter) White, Wayne Shepherd, Doug (Debbie) Shepherd, Keith (Karen) Shepherd, George (Audrey) Shepherd, Shirley (nee Carson) Johnson, Elaine (nee Carson) Ashfield, Sharon (nee Carson) (Rick) Norwig and all of their families.
