Elsie Marie Litzenberger was born March 7, 1933, and ended her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Tuesday, July 21, 2021, at the age of 88 years. She was born on the family farm outside of Neudorf, SK, to Ludwig and Elfrieda (nee Schweitzer) Ulmer. Elsie was baptized in Neudorf and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church in Neudorf in 1947.
Elsie grew up on the farm outside of Neudorf and attended Pheasant Hills School. She loved school and even made her father take her on the stormy days when no other children would go. In her teenage years, she worked at the Fort San tuberculosis sanatorium.
Elsie met the love of her life, Herb, in 1951, and the two were married just months later in Vancouver, BC. Together they lived in Port Moody in a house rented from Bill and Erna Lutz while Herb worked at the shingle mill. In March 1952, they moved to Neudorf . On June 17, 1952, their first child, Barry, was born. Elsie remained at home as a stay-at-home mom.
In March of 1955, the family moved back to Port Coquitlam, BC, where Elsie worked as a nurses' aide at Essondale Mental Health Hospital. In 1965, their second child, Sharon, was born in New Westminster, BC. In 1969, the family moved to Kamloops, BC, where Herb bought a new barber shop. Elsie worked as a sales clerk at the Eaton’s Department Store for a number of years until she got a job at B.C. Hydro. They stayed in Kamloops until 1985, when Elsie and Herb decided to move home to Neudorf to care for Elsie’s ailing mother. At that time, Elsie and Herb purchased the Neudorf Pool Hall and Barber Shop.
Elsie enjoyed being busy. She had numerous jobs after moving home to Saskatchewan, working at the Royal Bank, the coffee shop in Neudorf, as well as a care aide at the Melville Group Home. Elsie also volunteered her time to the community, working as mayor from 1991 until 2003. Elsie’s main love of life was her family. She spent countless hours helping her children and grandchildren, whom she loved so much. She would be found endlessly baking and cooking for family and friends. Often she would take homemade baking to people in town who were shut-ins or battling with their health. Elsie also loved to work in her flowerbeds and was very talented with a needle and thread. She could sew, embroider, knit and crochet better than anyone we’ve ever met. Elsie loved to socialize and dance; Elsie and Herb spent many evenings dancing in all of the local dance halls. It was one of their favourite things to do as a couple. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage until Herb’s passing in 2006.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Litzenberger; her parents, Ludwig H. Ulmer and Elfrieda Ulmer (nee Schweitzer); and her siblings, Norine Issel, Paul Ulmer and George Ulmer. She leaves behind her loving children, Barry Litzenberger and Sharon (Rory) Clark; her brother, Elroy and wife Bev; sisters-in-law Bernice Ulmer and Faye Ulmer; six grandchildren, Amanda, Michael (Jenn), Matthew Litzenberger, Dalton (Dori), Hayden (Anna) and James (Clover) Piller; along with six great-grandchildren, Jaiden, Brandon, Austin, Charlie, Adelynn and Emmett; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved very much.
Elsie was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and she will be dearly missed. A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 29, 2021, at 2:00 pm at Matthews Funeral Home in Melville, Saskatchewan. Interment will follow at the Neudorf Village Cemetery and a luncheon at the Neudorf Hall.
