Jean Meadows was born December 15, 1929, in Whitewood, SK, and died there Saturday, June 26, 2021. In those 91 years, she lived a life of kindness and of kinship with her family and her community.

Jean was raised on a farm in the Armentieres district north of Whitewood. She never tired of telling stories of hard work on the farm and the good times with family and neighbours as she was growing up.

Jean started her career at the Bank of Montreal in Whitewood, retiring from that position after 25 years of service. After a short time away from work to care for her ailing mother, she spent another 15 years as a secretary in the Broadview School Division office.

Jean’s interests were many and varied. She loved to read and was a local historian. Her love of nature took her on many drives in the country. She was a faithful fan and follower of the Whitewood Orioles hockey team for many years. Jean enjoyed travel and had stories of trips to many Canadian destinations. However, her most memorable trip was in 1961 when she accompanied her mother to England to tour the birthplace of her parents and meet many English relatives. An avid letter writer, she always kept in touch with friends and family in England as well as throughout Canada.

Jean was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Whitewood, singing in the choir, serving as a vestry member, and acting as secretary or treasurer of the evening branch of ACW for many years.

Jean was predeceased by her parents, Edwin and Gertrude Meadows; sisters Margaret Rieger and Doris Keeler; brothers-in-law Joe Rieger and John Keeler; and nephew Edwin Rieger. She is survived by niece Shirley (Del) Coderre; nephew Donald (Linda) Keeler; great-nieces and -nephew: Melissa (Barry) Chorneyko and family, Joseph, Catherine, Lucy, Anna and Michael; Candace (Bill) Ruetz and family, Nathan, Emily, Elizabeth, Daniel, Claire and Matthew; Nadine Coderre (Scott Derby); Colette (Jeremy) Procyshen and boys, Luke, Dominic and Brett; Sabrina (John) Beggs and daughter Britley; and Bruce (Pamela) Keeler and family, Gabrielle and Rhett.

Family was very special to Jean. She had a generous heart and spirit. She never failed to remember a birthday or special day but also had a habit of making an ordinary day special with an unexpected gift or thoughtful gesture.

Special thanks to the caring staff at Whitewood Community Health Centre for making Jean so comfortable in her new home for the past two and a half years.

The funeral will be later in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Box 625, Whitewood, S0G 5C0 or Whitewood Community Health Centre, Box 699, Whitewood, S0G 5C0.
