It's with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Helen Vassos on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, in Melville, SK, at the age of 88 years.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, sister Mary Edwards and brother Steve Antal. She will be lovingly remembered by her three children, Cindy Vassos, Marcus (Dianne) Vassos and Cletus (Lisa) Vassos; and grandchildren Alexander and Niki Donnelly, Carlie Vassos and Owen and Hilary Vassos.
Helen was born in Lestock, SK, on November 2, 1932, the daughter of Steve and Margaret Antal and the youngest of three children. She enjoyed all sports, and any spare time away from school and farming was spent curling and playing fastball. Helen moved to Melville in the early '50s and landed a job at the CN Beanery; that's where our dad laid eyes on her and said to his buddies, "I'm going to marry that woman". Later on she worked for Dr. Gellman's Dental Practice as a receptionist.
Helen and Gordon were married on May 14, 1956, and immediately began to raise a family. Her passion for sports continued, as she was an avid league bowler for most of her adult life. Helen worked as a bureau agent for the Regina Leader Post and operated a Pizzaria in the early 70s. She moved on from making pizza to helping her husband, Gordon, as owner/operator of the Bake-Rite Bakery, which they closed in the mid-'80s. Helen continued to manage the Leader Post bureau and occasionally helped with cleaning and keeping things in order at House of Hair until retirement. She was a devoted Catholic and member of The Catholic Women's League of Canada for over 50 years.
Helen found comfort in her later years spending time with her children and grandchildren and enjoying the peacefulness of being outside feeding the birds and gardening. Our mom worked tirelessly and instilled the value of hard work in all of us. We will remember our mother for her unconditional love, dedication to the community and genuine friendship with so many. She spent hours baking for family and friends over the holidays, loved listening to the radio and especially enjoyed the Roughrider football games. There is comfort knowing Mom and Dad are together again, laughing and dancing.
Thank you, Mom, for everything and all the memories we will cherish forever in our hearts.
