It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leon Dale Walchuk, 57 years of age, on Monday, July 27, 2020.
Leon was born in Melville, SK, on July 27, 1963. The little “Tyke” was the elder of two children born to Eugene “Corky” and Molly (Woronuik) Walchuk. He grew up on the Walchuk farm east of Melville and attended St. Henry’s School, graduating from the Melville Comprehensive High School in 1981.
In October of 1987, Leon was united in marriage to Corrine Scheske. The couple lived on the farm Leon had purchased from Alf and Kinga Gadica, just down the road from where Leon grew up. They had two children who Leon loved dearly. He would often bring his children along to auction sales, which were always accompanied by a trip to the water slides. Leon never failed to ask about his children or his nephews and niece when we spoke.
Over the years, Leon had worked a variety of jobs including store manager, car salesman and mechanic, but all jobs were second to farming. In the last few years, Leon resided in Edmonton, anticipating his return to the family farm; he had just recently applied to ISC for the Century Family Farm recognition. While in Edmonton, Leon spent numerous hours with cousins Murray Gadica and Wendy (Richard) Antoniuk and his godmother, Peggy Matewush. On his visits, Leon enjoyed helping out around the yards, doing numerous repairs – and winning at cards.
Leon was also a respected member of a Christian Men’s Group, where he was noted to be a man of few words, a calming presence and for having the ability to calm down a vigorous discussion. He never got angry and could always find a positive perspective for issues.
At the time of his passing, Leon was employed by Bill Poliakiwski, who is a farmer and wood processor near Edmonton. Bill told me that Leon always had “a smile on his face”, “there was nothing he couldn’t fix” and that “he did everything I ever wanted of him and more”. He also told me of Leon’s continued care of his appearance, the respect Leon earned from his co-workers and acquaintances, his love of A&W burgers and that he kept his sense of humour through all of his trials and tribulations over the years. Bill stated that he “thought of Leon as a son” and will be “lost without him”.
Leon was known to be hard working and tenacious in all his pursuits. He appreciated family tradition and passed those values on to his children. Leon had an appreciation for old cars and John Deere equipment.
Leon was predeceased by his parents and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He leaves to mourn his passing: his children, Steven (Sara) Walchuk of Regina, SK, and Kimberly Collins of Melville, SK; his grandson, Anthony Collins of Melville, SK; his sister, Linda (Dalton) Clifford of Love, SK, and their children, Vincent (Nordika) Clifford of Regina, SK, Glenn Clifford of Regina, SK, Lloyd Clifford of Saskatoon, SK, and Kathryn (Anton) MacMillan of Lloydminster, SK; great-nephew T-Jay Puffer of Lloydminster, SK, and many relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, gifts of remembrance may be made to The Do More Agriculture Foundation at domore.ag .
The graveside service is private for immediate family, but will be live-streamed on Matthews Funeral Home's Facebook page. In keeping with Covid-19 regulations, the family invites you to watch the stream rather than attending the services.
