It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doreen Lillian Dietz, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Doreen was born on August 17, 1934, to Alma (nee Hohm) and William Litzenberger in Melville, Saskatchewan, the third of eight children.
When Doreen was in her late teens, she met a handsome young carpenter named Henry Dietz, and together they built a life of love on their dairy farm centred upon family, hard work and laughter. Over the years, they were blessed with seven beautiful children that will forever hold dear the memory of her loving smile, her laugh and the taste of her legendary cabbage rolls.

As Doreen and Henry’s family began, Doreen took great pleasure and pride in teaching Sunday school and then rolling up her sleeves to milk cows on their growing farm. Doreen loved being outside with her many animals which, at one point, included a Llama named Oliver. During harvest time, she worked tirelessly, filling everyone’s hearts with her kindness and their bellies with her wonderful baking, soups, stews and pickles. Her love of nature was evident as one strolled around the farm yard filled with her hummingbird feeders, flower beds and bountiful garden ready for canning season. Whether it was spotting a new bird or breaking up a cat fight with her broom, she revelled in it all. Although finding quiet time was a rarity with seven children and a family farm, Doreen took pleasure in reading, word puzzles, knitting, crocheting and sewing. In her later years, watching her stories became a favourite past time. Her welcoming nature led to numerous gatherings at the farm, from her children’s classmates around the fire pit for a wiener roast to family holiday dinners. There was never an amount of food nor people too large for Doreen to handle.

Being part of Doreen’s life meant that you could always look forward to receiving a Christmas or Easter card, and no matter how large the family grew, a birthday wish from Mom/Grandma/Nana always arrived. A void has been left in our hearts and lives, but we will smile when we hear a songbird’s sweet melody. Sadly missed and forever loved by her husband of 66 years, Henry Dietz; her children, Linda (Jake) Gross, Gary Dietz, Ron (Dagmar) Dietz, Cheryl (Mike) Holmes, Ken Dietz (Glenda Pollock), Lorie Rathgeber and Tim Dietz (Marina Thompson); her grandchildren, Lana (Rob) Noel, Tracy Gross (Jason Zwarych), Renelle (Dan) McGill, Levi Bucsis (Kelli Wallace), Russell (Amy) Bucsis, Elizabeth (Kevin) Livingstone, Trevor (Nicole) Pollock, Tyler (Leila) Pollock, Travis (Lisa) Pollock and Travis (Larissa) Rathgeber; her great-grandchildren, Hudson and Harlee, Jaden and Rylan, Evan, Terra and Ember, William, Gavin, Eliya and Tiana, Maddox and Jayla. Doreen’s memory will also be cherished by her sisters, in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doreen’s name can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
