Eric Swan Backman passed away unexpectedly in Melville, SK, on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at the age of 71 years.

Born in Melville on October 6, 1948, Eric was predeceased by his mother, Peggy; his father, Ernie; and his brother, Ken. He is survived by his sisters, Verna Travis (Bobby) and Sandra Casper; and nephews Trevor, Brett (Christine), Kevin and Curtis.

Eric graduated from the University of Regina, where he obtained a degree in education. Throughout his career, he taught in Weekes, Churchbridge and Lipton, retiring at the age of 53. After retirement, he continued to substitute teach for many years.

Eric is fondly remembered by many decades of students. It wasn’t uncommon for his nephews to mention him at hockey rinks across the province and meet many a student who had him as a teacher in small-town Saskatchewan. Eric’s family has many happy memories of their time with him at Crooked Lake and “Unc’s” visits to Regina for every holiday. Eric had a special passion for traveling and will be especially missed by his close circle with whom he traveled to Cancun, Mexico, every year. He is fondly remembered and missed dearly by all his friends and family.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home in Melville, SK. Interment will take place in the Melville City Cemetery.
