Eric Swan Backman passed away unexpectedly in Melville, SK, on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at the age of 71 years.

Born in Melville on October 6, 1948, Eric was predeceased by his mother, Peggy; his father, Ernie; and his brother, Ken. He is survived by his sisters, Verna Travis (Bobby) and Sandra Casper; and nephews Trevor, Brett (Christine), Kevin and Curtis.

Eric graduated from the University of Regina, where he obtained a degree in education. Throughout his career, he taught in Weekes, Churchbridge and Lipton, retiring at the age of 53. After retirement, he continued to substitute teach for many years.

Eric is fondly remembered by many decades of students. It wasn’t uncommon for his nephews to mention him at hockey rinks across the province and meet many a student who had him as a teacher in small-town Saskatchewan. Eric’s family has many happy memories of their time with him at Crooked Lake and “Unc’s” visits to Regina for every holiday. Eric had a special passion for traveling and will be especially missed by his close circle with whom he traveled to Cancun, Mexico, every year. He is fondly remembered and missed dearly by all his friends and family.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home in Melville, SK. Interment will take place in the Melville City Cemetery. A private luncheon for family and close friends will follow. For online condolences, please visit www.matthewsfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements are entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.

Our deepest condolences on the loss of an amazing brother, uncle and friend to so many. We have so many wonderful memories of Eric: meeting at university and having many classes together
- celebrating birthdays for three days - his on Oct.6th and mine on Oct. 4th
-his hitchhiking ability
-staying with us when his walkup apartment was too cold
-trip together to Maritimes in 1974
-best man at our wedding in Melville in 1975
-time at the Legion in Melville
-meeting with your relatives from England and going to the pub with them after supper
-visits to the cabin at Melville Beach
-my family riding in Eric's boat
-the famous pig roast with all the university buddies and their families
-Eric being very patient as he taught our son Chris how to tie his shoelaces with the little bunny story
-Eric dropping into visit on his way back from Winnipeg
-his love of family
My most recent memory is the very good visit we had on the phone in Oct. celebrating our birthdays. We are so very thankful for all of the wonderful memories that we have. We will miss Eric very much .

Verna and Sandra, my condolences to you and your family as you try to comprehend what has happened.
Our class of 69 will remember Eric and the fun we had planning our 50th High School reunion.
I am also saddened as a part of my childhood is gone but the memories will linger on.
