Darryl Alvin Schneider was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, February 29, 1964. On April 20, 1964, he was adopted by Oscar and Kay Schneider and was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church in Regina. Shortly after, in 1964 with his new-found family, he moved to the farm just west of Melville to be closer to the rest of the Schneider family.
Darryl attended Sunday school at Zion Lutheran Church in Melville and was confirmed in 1978. His education began with elementary school at Miller School and then continued at Melville Junior High. He graduated from the Melville Comprehensive School in 1982. Further education took Darryl to Saskatoon, where he enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan in the College of Agriculture. The following year, he moved to Regina and attended the Wascana Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, where he enrolled in Agricultural Mechanics; he graduated in 1984. Darryl also received a certificate in Local Government Administration from the University of Regina in 2005 and proudly walked across the stage as his children watched.
Being the unique guy he was, on April 1, 1984, Darryl asked Joy Hollinger to marry him. He always said anyone can get engaged at Christmas, New Year’s or Valentine’s Day. They were married June 14, 1985, and spent 33 happy years together; they raised three wonderful children.
Darryl truly was a jack-of-all trades. He was a skilled uncertified carpenter, plumber, electrician, mechanic and chef. There really wasn’t much he couldn’t do, or as he often said, “When in doubt, ask Google or You Tube”.
Darryl had many places of employment. As a teenager, his first job was at the Melville Saan Store. Others included Alf’s Service Center, Neudorf Co-op, James Tire Melville, James Tire Assiniboia, Schneider’s Lucky Dollar, CTV Sales, Hugh Bradshaw Vegetable Farm, Natural Valley Farms, CN Rail, Hollinger Farms and finally, Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Company. Through the years, Darryl and Joy became proficient in moving, as they moved a total of 12 times.
Darryl loved sports, whether it was watching or playing. He played hockey, fastball, slow-pitch, curling, golf, broomball, and even tried waterskiing. He loved being on his pontoon boat and spent every minute he could at the family cabin. Darryl also loved to coach sports and coached and managed countless fastball and hockey teams.
Darryl was also an avid volunteer and was always willing to give a helping hand. He belonged to the Assiniboia and Melville Kinsmen Clubs, Neudorf Lions Club, Neudorf Winter Sports board, Neudorf Minor Ball, Neudorf Hall board, Neudorf Village Council, Melville Minor Hockey, SCIC Social Club and Melville Prairie Fire Hockey. He especially enjoyed organizing hockey tournaments and the Neudorf sports day.
On Darryl’s 30th birthday, he was reunited with his birth mother, Marilyn Ostmoen. Darryl was excited and thrilled to have increased his family and cherished every moment with his new siblings and mother and father.
Darryl was predeceased by his parents, Oscar Schneider and Kay (Schneider) Beres; stepdad Ed Beres; stepdad Oscar Ostmoen; and father-in-law Jacob Hollinger. He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Joy; their children, Amy (Lucas) Thomas, Steven (Emily) Schneider and Holly Schneider (Jon Prudun); granddaughters Elyse and Natalie Thomas; his mother, Marilyn Ostmoen; brother Lyle (Donna) Ostmoen and nephews Zachary and Drew Ostmoen; sister Karen Litke and nephews Liam and Nikolaus and niece Gabriela; sister Starla Schneider and nephew Adrian (Tonya) Miller; mother-in-law Doreen Hollinger; brother-in-law Rodney (Sandy) Hollinger; nephew Jason (Rachel) Hollinger, niece Amanda Fafard, nephews Sean Hollinger and Austin Fafard, Joey (Mia) Hollinger, nephews Dylan and Austin Hollinger, niece Jade Hollinger; brother-in-law Larry (Leanne) Hollinger, niece Whitney (Jeremy) Scheirer, nephew Carter and niece Jaida, nephew Justin Hollinger, niece Shelby (Ben) Bucholz; brother-in-law Tim Hollinger, nephew Andrew Hollinger, nieces Kristyn and Abbey Hollinger; sister-in-law Sandra Hollinger; and many dear friends.
Darryl passed away unexpectedly on April 15, 2019, after a short illness. He will be greatly missed by all.
