Obituary for Ruth Hoehn

Ruth was born on December 25, 1928, to Henry and Katherine (nee Schienbein) Schmidt on the family farm south of Neudorf. Ruth was the second eldest daughter of four children. She attended Baber School and later worked at the Neudorf Hospital for a brief time before she met Ernie. Ruth married Ernie on June 20, 1952. Two years later they were blessed with their first child, Garry; a year and a half later, James was born; and four years following him, their beautiful daughter, Jannet, arrived.
Ruth worked on the family farm helping Ernie with many farm duties. She loved her family and spent many summers looking after her nieces and nephews. Ruth spent time cooking and baking to feed the relatives that would come for holidays to the farm. The kids loved having their cousins around to work and play with! Ruth loved to bake and was known for her cinnamon buns. The boys remember their friends stealing them out of their lunch boxes at school. Ruth made sure faith was instilled in her kids and attended church regularly.
Ruth was Garry and Jim’s biggest fan in the hockey rink and at the ball diamonds. In fact, she cheered so loudly at one hockey game in Lemberg that her false teeth actually flew out on to the ice surface. She quickly jumped onto the ice to retrieve them and hopped back over the boards before anyone else even noticed. Ruth didn’t miss a game, and she continued her love for those sports when her grandchildren were old enough to play. Some of us are lucky enough to remember sleepovers at Grandma and Grandpa’s in the valley – Grandma would always say “let’s hit the hay”, and upstairs we would go to her room, where we would snuggle together in her small bed in her very blue room. We would wake up to the smell of coffee and cigarettes downstairs and her asking if we would like our fruit loops for breakfast, a treat usually only at Grandma’s house.
Grandma and Grandpa moved to Neudorf in 1988 and enjoyed many years in town. Grandma loved playing bingo, playing cards with friends and grandchildren, and having coffee uptown with her friends. She enjoyed watching her soaps in the afternoon and did a lot of crocheting in the evenings. Grandma would love to have her afternoon “rests”, but always denied it – she was just “resting her eyes”. She spent many hours in her garden and produced one of the best vegetable gardens in town! Grandma loved having her entire family over for holiday meals. Of course, there was no shortage of food – some of our favourites were her bean pickles, plum perogies and pig’s ears. All ten grandchildren have many fond memories of playing hide and seek in Grandma’s basement, ‘spoons’, which got a little out of hand sometimes, and stealing frozen cookies out of her freezer.
Grandma’s eyes would always light up when her grandchildren and later, her great-grandchildren, showed up to visit. She would squeeze them tight and offer them a chocolate chip cookie from her always full cookie jar; and don’t you worry, we didn’t take just one, it was usually multiples.
Many things changed for her when she suffered her stroke in 2001. Grandma’s determination and persistence helped her to overcome many challenges. Thank you to the community for their patience, compassion and understanding.
Grandma moved to Boyle Place in Neudorf and later to Helping Hands in Melville. Being the head of her family, she always kept up with her children’s lives and their families. She liked nothing more than for her family to stop in for a visit or to take her out.
Grandma passed away peacefully in St. Paul Lutheran Home on Friday morning, April 5, 2019, at the age of 90 years. We will miss you deeply, Grandma, especially your big smile, your presence at the window when we arrived at your house and the big wave when we left. Rest peacefully, Grandma Hoehn – we all love you!
Ruth was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Ernest (2006); her brother, Norman Schmidt; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Lawrence Miller, Joe Bender, Oscar and Ruth Hoehn, Hilda and Walter Ulmer, Irene and George Sweeney, Bruce Lowden and Caroline Bondi. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Garry (Sherry) Hoehn, Jim (Marilyn) Hoehn and Jannet (Sam) Hockings; her grandchildren, Joel (Shari) Hoehn and their children, Colby and Kayla; Derrick (Amanda) Hoehn and their children, Caiden and Emma; Mitchell (Meghan) Hoehn and their children, West and Briggs; Jenna Hoehn; Jill (James) Lubachowski and their children, Kaleb and Hudson; Page (Colin) Gauthier and their daughter, Brynlee; Drew Hoehn; Erin (Wallace) Bornhuse and their children, Kenzie, Ezra and Mieke; Adam (Tiffany) Hockings and their daughter, Aubrie; and Amy Hockings; Ruth’s sisters, Eileen Miller and Eleanor Bender; sisters-in-law Janet Schmidt and Lydia Lowden; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
