Mary de Laforest (nee Flick) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at the Whitewood Community Health Centre with her son Laurent and daughter-in-law Irene by her side.

Maria Lucie Leonie de Laforest was born on October 1, 1924, to Albert and Azeline (Morice) Flick.
She grew up in the St. Hubert district before marrying Paul de Laforest and living on a farm west of Whitewood. They later sold the farm and moved to town in 1972; this would be the first time she would have running water!

Mary was employed twice at the Whitewood Hotel – the first time was cleaning rooms and later she was hired as a waitress in the bar for Harry Minovitch. She was to try it out for just a couple weeks, but the two weeks turned into over twelve years, when the hotel changed hands and the new owner took over.

Mary loved being a grandma and spoiling her grandchildren… but just a little bit. It was not an accident that there was a sign in her kitchen that said “If Mother says ‘no’, ask Grandma!”

Mary kept a diary for many years. Friends and relatives were known to call on Mary when they needed to know someone’s birthday, anniversary or just the date something happened. If she didn’t know it off the top of her head, she would check it out in her diaries.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Paul; parents Azeline and Albert Flick; brothers Lawrence and Henry Flick, along with their wives, Dorothy and Eileen; her sister Marguerite and her husband, George Gamble. Also predeceasing her were sons Denis, Marcel, Henri and Edward. She is survived by son Laurent (Irene), their children Carrie, Chris (Elan) and Chelsea; daughter Louise (Terry), their children Tanya (Derek) Bernard and Nolan (LaDene) Keith; son Albert (Janet), his children Traci (Grant) Moir, Lisa (Randy) Bunse and Sherri (Murray) Merkel, and their mother, Irene; other surviving grandchildren are Kim (Terry) Heckman and Tammy (Craig) Moser, their mother, Gert; Pauline (Brian) Haines and Laura de Laforest, their mother, Mae; David de Laforest and Linette (Jen) de Laforest, their mother, Kathy; along with 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a Funeral Service held for Mary on April 15, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Whitewood. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted for:
