Obituary for Elmer Mervin Schmidt

It is with great sadness that the family of Elmer Schmidt announces his peaceful passing at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville, SK, on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at the age of 83 years.

Elmer was born on August 30, 1935, to Jacob and Sophie (Mohr) Schmidt in Melville, SK. He was the fourth oldest of 11 children. Elmer was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Melville, and on November 3, 1962, was married at St. Paul’s to his wife, Beverly.

In 1959 Elmer and Beverly moved to Oshawa, ON, where Elmer was employed at General Motors. He worked for 33.1 years there, retiring on May 1, 1992. In 2008 they returned back home to live in Melville.

Elmer was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Sophie (Mohr) Schmidt; brothers Gordon, George and Robert (Bob); sister Janet Serfas; brothers-in-law Jacob Mann, Victor Dochuk and Walter Zrudlo; and sisters-in-law Tilly Schmidt and Lillian Schmidt. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Beverly (Litke) Schmidt, and his daughters, Laura Schmidt and Sharon Jones (Darryl) of Oshawa, ON. He was the beloved grandfather of Jonathan, James, Robert, Lindsay, Wyatt and Matthew. Elmer is also survived by his sisters, Betty Mann of Melville, SK, Gladys Zrudlo of Yorkton, SK, and Shirley Dochuk of St. Albert, AB; his brothers, Ross (Myrna) Schmidt of Neudorf, SK, Ron Schmidt of Vernon, BC, and Barry Schmidt of Kelowna, BC; and many nieces and nephews.

At Elmer’s request, there will be no funeral. His cremated remains will be interred at a later date at a private family service. Arrangements are entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.
