Obituary for Mary Schindel

Mary Emma (Hauser) Schindel was born on January 5, 1923, in Birmingham, SK. She was the seventh child born to Henry and Mary Hauser. Henry’s first wife died in childbirth and left behind three children. He later married Mary Barber and had 10 additional children, including Mary.

Mary went to Birmingham school until Grade 8 and then helped on the farm and got a job helping the Schindel family, where she met her husband Arthur. They were married on November 16, 1943, and had a son and a daughter, Mervyn born in 1948 and Diana born in 1950.

Mary and Arthur spent their lives in the Melville area, farming north of Melville until 1967 when he retired. They sold the farm and moved into a house in town. Mary worked as a domestic aid at St. Peter’s hospital for 25 years as well. They attended the Pentecostal church in Melville for their whole lives and both had a variety of roles. Mary was on the church board and had various roles in the Sunday school. Arthur passed away in December 1990 at the age of 82.

Mary loved singing and was a member of a few choirs, including the German Heritage Choir for many years. She also loved flowers, gardening, cooking, canning, baking, quilting, reading, hosting suppers and her trips to BC to visit family. Especially loved were her potato pancakes and cabbage rolls.

Mary went to be with her Lord in the early morning of Thursday, July 26, 2018, at St. Peters Hospital, Melville, at the age of 95 years.

Mary is survived by her son Mervyn and his wife Trudy and her daughter Diana, grandchildren Nadine and her husband Clayton, Shaun and Daphne and great-granddaughter Amelia. She will be sadly missed by her brothers, Jack and Bill (Mavis), and her sister, Elsie, as well as her sister-in-law Evelyn Hauser (wife of the late Walter Hauser) and numerous nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Mary; her husband, Arthur; her brothers Fred, John, Ed, Albert, Wilbert, Joe and Walter; and sisters Martha (1917) and Martha (1978).
