Obituary for
Adam Edward Ottenbreit
Adam was born April 3, 1924 on the family farm located on the NE 2-20-6-W2nd, R.M. of Grayson. He was the son of Adam Sr. And Rose (Huber) Ottenbreit. Adam grew up on the family farm and went to Flegel School until Grade 8. In the summer Adam and his brothers and sisters would walk three miles to school and in the winter they would go with horse and cutter. Adam helped on the farm until 1945 when he enlisted and joined the army. He went to Calgary, AB until the end of the war. On October 18, 1948 Adam married Violet Stradeski at St. Mary’s R.C. Church in Grayson. He took over the family farm and farmed two quarters, eventually owning six quarters. Violet and Adam had a mixed farming operation. They milked cows, raised pigs and chickens like most farmers in those good old days. Adam was an avid sportsman, hunting and fishing from a young age. Adam learned to swim on his won and was a lifeguard at Greenspot on Crooked Lake when Chris Appell was the owner. Adam coached the Flegel Flyers hockey team and Grayson Bombers baseball team. In 1968 he was a 4-H woodworking leader with Edward Ottenbreit and Sebastian Parislau. After returning from WWII, Adam was hired as a telephone repairman. He worked for the Grayson Southern and Northern Telephone Company. Adam helped with the construction of the Grayson Skating Rink carrying sheets of plywood up the ladder because he was used to climbing telephone poles and was not afraid of heights.
In 1979 Adam and Violet retired and built a house in Grayson. After moving into town Adam worked a couple of years as a farm labourer for David Reiger and then helped his son, Bev, with seeding and harvest. Adam and Violet were caretakers of Cecilia Hall for a short time. They were active parishioners of St. Mary’s Parish. Violet died May 13, 1985 and Adam continued to live in his house in Grayson. On January 3, 1987 Adam married Mary Gravel. In July. 2009 Mary went to live at the Gateway Lodge in Canora and Adam stayed in Grayson until February 2010 when he moved into Melville and lived at Heritage House where more personal care was available.
