Alfred Casper Ochs
Al Ochs of Melville, SK passed away at Pasqua Hospital in Regina, SK on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the age of 84 years.Left to cherish his memory are Mary, his loving wife of 58 years, and their children Nadine (Ron) Heizelman of Medicine Hat, AB, Glenn (Brenda) of Melville, SK, Holly (Rob) Mercer of North Battleford, SK and Clayton (Marilyn) of Saskatoon, SK; as well as 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and his cat, Comet. Al has three sisters, Ann (Jack) Woodrow, Helen (Simon) Fenrich and Marie (Larry) Hampson; and two sisters-in-law, Olga (Sam) Turuk and Anne (Felix) Bauer. Having predeceased Al are his parents; his sister Helen Fenrich; his mother and father-in-law William and Vera Bahniuk; and four brothers-in-law Eric Kjargaard, Simon Fenrich, Jack Woodrow and Sam Turuk.Al was born November 27, 1927 in Landis, SK to Casper and Katherine Ochs who homesteaded in Ibstone, SK where they lived in a sod house, a log house and then a lumber house.Al and Mary were married August 1, 1953 at Battleford, SK and farmed near Ibstone until 1958 when they moved to North Battleford. Through the years Al has been a farmer, a mechanic, a car salesman and a business owner. These various careers resulted in Al and Mary moving to Cudworth, SK in 1980 and then to Melville in 1985. When not working, Al kept busy reading, gardening, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and doing crossword puzzles. He loved to entertain friends and family and always enjoyed a game of cards. The sharing of good stories and hearty laughs were abundant. Right into the fall of 2011 Al still enjoyed a round of golf and a game of curling with his friends. In his younger days, he also played softball and 5-pin bowling. Trophies and prizes throughout the house speak to his sporting abilities. Many clubs and organizations benefited from his support and involvement including Knights of Columbus, B.P.O. Elks, Scouts Canada, Ducks Unlimited and the Royal Canadian Legion.The family extends thanks to the staff of St. Peter’s Hospital and Dr. Koleski of Melville; the staff of the Yorkton Regional Health Centre and Dr. Oloko; and the staff of Pasqua Hospital and Dr. Allport; and the many helping hands of the Sunrise Health Region Home Care.
