Obituary for
Herbert Ludwig Unterschute
We celebrate and honour the life of Herbert Ludwig Unterschute who was united with the Lord on Monday, July 26, 2010.Herbert Ludwig Unterschute was born November 13, 1928, in Melville, SK. Herb was the youngest of eight children born to Valentine and Elsa (nee Littke) Unterschute. He received his education at Success School and farmed on the homestead with his parents. When Herb’s brothers returned from overseas he moved to Vancouver to work in the shipyard. After a call from his dad, he returned home to take over the family farm. On November 6, 1951, he married the love of his life, Martha Hahn at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melville. Farming and family was now a joint venture and they were blessed with the arrival of Wendy in 1953 and Debbie in 1955. Farming in the 50’s was very much like it is today so Herb decided to supplement their income and hired on with the CN in 1955. Herb soon recognized that his temporary financial fix was going to be his full time career so they sold the farm to Dan Hahn and Melville became home in 1956. City ground turned out to be as fertile as the country soil and Lori, blessing number three arrived in 1958. A brief shortage of work forced the family to move to Hinton, AB for the winter of 1960/1961. When things picked up on the CN, the family moved back to Melville. Blessing number four – Shelley was born in 1962. They built the house they currently reside in, in 1964. In 1972, Candace, the fifth blessing arrived. Herb retired from the CN in 1988. He enjoyed 22 years of retirement filled with fishing, gardening, travel and carpentry. His retirement and his final days were spent surrounded by his loving family and friends.Herb was predeceased by his parents, Valentine and Elsa Unterschute; stepfather, Henry Gattinger; his siblings Valentine Unterschute Jr., Frieda and Robert Grosse, Martha and John Montie, Art Pachal, Bill and Eva Unterschute, Edward and Ellen Unterschute, and Ray Unterschute.
