Orpha Melvina Vassos (Young)
It is with broken hearts that the family of Orpha Vassos announces her sudden passing in Saskatoon on Monday, July 20th.Orpha was born in Melville, Saskatchewan on April 2, 1926, the youngest of five daughters to Frank and Elizabeth (nee Rasch) Young. She was raised and educated in Melville and her first job was working for the family business, Young’s Bakery and Confectionery. In November of 1946 Orpha married Hugh C. Vassos and together raised two sons, Hugh Gordon and Laurie John. They built the Paragon Theatre in 1955 and shortly after, the Stardust Drive-In Theatre. The drive-in became well known for her specialty, the Barbeque Beef Burger, a tasty recipe that Orpha developed. She was very active in her community, forming the first Melville afternoon skating club, was a member of the Melville and District German Heritage Club, the Kinettes and K-ettes, and was an original member of the Melville Arts Council. Orpha was also a competitive member of the Melville Bowling League. Orpha was a member of the First United Church in Melville and spent several years as a member of the Church Choir. She chaired the first Melville Homecoming Committee in 1983, an event that was a tremendous success and one that she took incredible pride in being part of. Orpha was an active member of, and also worked for, the Melville Chamber of Commerce and in 1983 & 85 was named the Chamber of Commerce Member of the Year. Years in fashion retail lead her to owning and operating her own clothing store, Jay Kay’s. Before retiring, she became a hostess and tour guide for a Saskatchewan motor coach tour company, travelling throughout North America. Orpha loved music, especially Viennese. One of the highlights of her life was a trip to Austria (her mother’s homeland) and a visit to the city of her dreams, Vienna. Orpha loved going for drives and having picnics with friends on a Sunday afternoon. She moved to Saskatoon in October 2008 to be close to family, leaving behind many life-long friends in Melville. Orpha was very proud of her family and was known to brag about “her boys” whenever she had the opportunity. Her four grandchildren held special places in her heart and she glowed with pride at their accomplishments.Orpha was predeceased by her husband Hugh in October 2005. She will be missed by her son Hugh his wife Beverley and their children Nicole and Zoe; son Laurie his wife Colleen and their children Alyssa and Nicholas; as well as family and friends.
