Micheline Nicol (nee Mauroy) was born on January 12, 1928, in Gent, Belgium, to Jules and Noele Mauroy, a little sister to Elise. She took her schooling in Gent, which was uneventful until the Nazi invasion of Belgium in May 1940. She witnessed the destruction of war and the suffering and misery it brought. Along with her parents and sister, Micheline was part of the Resistance Movement. And at great personal risk, she helped to feed and clothe Jewish families in hiding. After the war’s end, she and her parents emigrated to Canada in 1947 to join Elise, who had married a Canadian soldier (Hector Hall) and was now residing in Whitewood, SK. To say that things were different was an understatement, as Micheline left a bustling city of 600,000 people and moved to a small farm just outside of Whitewood. Gone were the days of running water and flush toilets! In May 1948 she landed the job of her dreams and joined the Bank of Montreal and moved into town. She loved her job, enjoyed many fun times with her colleagues and found a lifelong friend in Jean Meadows.
In 1954, Micheline married the love of her life, Ainsley Nicol. Outside of 10 months working in Regina, she stayed with the bank in Whitewood until 1959 when Michele was born, with Jim following in 1962. She was a proud stay-at-home mom until accepting part-time work at the post office in the late 1970s.
Over the years, Micheline made five trips back to Belgium to see family and friends. Although she never completely lost an attachment to her country of birth, she was proud to be a Canadian citizen.
Micheline was a charter member of the Order of the Royal Purple and served as treasurer for more years than anyone can remember . . . those years working in the bank had made her a wizard with numbers and a disciple of accuracy and organization. She was an active supporter of Michele and Jim’s various activities, including figure skating, band, hockey, school sports and piano. Education was important to Micheline, and she ensured that her five grandchildren received financial support to pursue their individual post-secondary interests.
Ainsley’s work with the post office took them to many provinces, where they made many lifelong friends. Part of Micheline died when Ainsley passed away in 2004, and she lived on her own until the advances of aging led to her new life at the Whitewood Community Health Centre in 2016. She was blessed to be among so many caring and supportive residents and staff. Life became increasingly difficult for her over the past week, and she passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 28, 2019, with Michele and Jim by her side.
Micheline leaves to cherish her life and memories: daughter Michele (John Myrah) and daughters Ainslie (Marc) and Kelsie (Adam) and son Scott (Kelly); son Jim, daughter Courtney (Tom), son Madison and their mother, Arlene; and friends and numerous nieces and nephews, especially the “three Hall children” who always held a special place in her heart.
