Obituary for Edward "Ed" Maurer

Print
Edward (Ed) Maurer died at St. Paul Lutheran Home, Melville, on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at the age of 94 years.

Ed was born on June 24, 1924, at Goodeve, SK, to Peter and Matilda (Armbruster) Maurer. He was baptized at the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Goodeve and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Duff. Ed attended elementary school at Robert School in the Goodeve district for four years. In the fall of 1934, his parents sold the family farm and moved to another farm in the Duff district. Ed then attended Colmer School for the remainder of his elementary education and also some high school. He was not able to complete high school due to difficult times on the family farm. In June of 1942, Ed lost his father in an accident at their home. This created a drastic hardship for the family; therefore, at the age of 18, Ed and his brother George had to carry on the farm to support their widowed mother and two school-aged sisters.

On October 30, 1947, Ed married Anna Werth of Grenfell, SK. They were married in a country church near Anna’s home. Anna and Eddie then took over the management of the Duff family farm, where they raised their children and remained until their retirement in the fall of 1990.

As a member of the Duff church, Ed served as secretary for 15 years, taught Sunday school, served as treasurer for 2 years and was a member of the mixed choir as well as the men’s choir. He served in a number of organizations at Duff: secretary-treasurer of the Duff Wheat Pool Committee for 40 + years, director of Pheasant Hills Telephone Company, director of Duff Co-op and assistant leader of the 4H Grain Club.

Ed’s interests included singing in the church choir, which he did for 71 years; he was musically-gifted and enjoyed playing the harmonica, guitar, accordion, and in later years, the electric organ. He also enjoyed spending his time bowling, curling and attending hockey games.

Ed’s fondest memories included visiting family in BC and trips to USA. One of his greatest goals was to be independent, and he said if he had to live his life over, he would not change a thing. Ed wanted his family to remember him for the positive things he did, forget the negative, and to forgive him for the things he did not do or should have done.

Ed was predeceased by his parents; wife Anna (2017); a daughter at her birth; son Mark; son-in-law Sam Stankov; sister Emma Frick and her husband Walter; sister Freda Welk and her husband Ernest; brother George and his wife Molly; and brother- in-law Ed Weisbrot. He is survived by his daughter, June; his son, Maurice and his wife Sheila; his daughter-in-law, Bev; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sister Lydia Weisbrot; and several nieces and nephews.
