Obituary for John Kohut

John Kohut
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of John Kohut on Monday, April 24, 2017, at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina following a brief illness.

John was born on July 7, 1935, in Broadview, SK to Harry and Katie Kohut (Fleece). He attended Broadview Elementary School, and his first job was at the Broadview Creamery at 16 years of age. He later hired on with the CPR shops. On June 26, 1958, John married Florence Zorn, and soon thereafter, they moved to Kenora, ON to pursue their future. Together they had three children, Richard John, Mona Genene and Shelly Gail. John stayed on with CP Rail until he was hired at the Kenora Pulp and Paper Mill, where he was employed as a papermaker for 18 years. A long mill strike back in the early-mid-70s forced him to seek work out of the area; he found temporary employment at the Metabi Mine as a security guard and later, the Dryden Mill, as a forklift operator, where he remained employed until his retirement in December 1997. John met his second love, Beverley Yanchak, and her four daughters, Debbie, Brenda, Stephanie and Marie, in Dryden in 1976.

John is survived by his daughters Mona (Chris) Stone, Morson, ON and Shelly Kohut (Armond), Kenora, ON; grandchildren Ronald, Shannon, Jennifer, Edward and great-grandchildren, Ronald (Junior), Darrell, Jonathon, Dalton and Blair. Also surviving him are his stepdaughters Brenda (Gerry) Cox, Winnipeg, MB, Stephanie Yanchak, Slave Lake, AB, and Marie Yanchak (Clint), Lac Seul, ON; step-grandchildren, Jeremy, Kaila, Jordan, Jaydan, and step-great-grandchildren, Jerome, Eloise, Emma, Kaidence and Camdyn. John is also survived by his eldest sister, Mary Dyke, by Victor Kohut (nephew, who Dad always considered more of a younger brother) and many other nieces, nephews and relatives too numerous to mention. John was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Katie Kohut, son Richard John, brother Mike, sister Sophie, wife Beverley, stepdaughter Debbie and brothers-in-law Allan Fowlie and Ernie Dyke.

Some of John’s interests throughout the years have included fishing, his favourite car which was his 1957 Chevy BelAire, amateur photography, bowling, cribbage and other board and card games played with family and friends. John was also a die-hard Saskatchewan Roughriders fan! At John’s request, cremation has taken place. A small memorial service for family and close friends in John’s honour will be held at Happy Hours Club Senior Centre in Broadview on Saturday, April 29, 2017, with Barb Wilkins officiating, with interment at the Broadview Cemetery and a light luncheon to follow at Happy Hours Senior Centre. Thank you to the kind and caring nursing staff of the Pasqua Palliative Care unit. Your compassion shown to Dad in his final days will never be forgotten. You are all angels. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Pasqua Hospital or to a charity of your choice.
