Obituary for
Alfred Rene "Fred" LaVallee
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and papa, Fred LaVallee, on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the age of 73 years. Alfred “Fred” Rene LaVallee was born on February 3, 1943 on a farm near Marieval, Saskatchewan. He was the son of Saint Pierre LaVallee and Lena Bobb. Fred lived in Melville for most of his adult life where he raised his five children: Troy, Cory (wife Heidi), Kelly Currah (husband Pat and son Brendan), Sheldon (wife Niki and sons Grady and Aiden) and Leslie (wife Katherine and daughters Madeline and Genevieve). He’s also survived by his sister Rose Williams and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fred had a long career working as a conductor for CN Rail. Upon retiring, he was very involved in the community; he was a member of the Elks, Legion, Lions and Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as touching many lives as an AA sponsor and mentor.
Fred was an avid sportsman and enjoyed watching ball, hockey and curling, as well as going bowling and dancing. He also liked gardening and watching Western movies and was never found without a coffee in his hand.
Fred loved spending time with his family and always had time for a visit. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He also enjoyed time with his long-time companion, Hilda Rathgeber and her family.
A prayer service for Fred will be held on Thursday, June 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home in Melville. The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Melville with the Rev. Doug Schmirler officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and area.
