Obituary for
Jean Aileen Golaiy (Johnson)
Jean Golaiy of Whitewood unexpectedly passed away on Saturday June 4, 2016 after a brief stay in
the Moosomin hospital.
Jean Aileen was born at Saskatoon on November 22, 1930 to August and Maime Johnson. They
lived in Dunblane for a year after she was born and then they moved to a farm in the New Finland
district in 1931. Jean attended Deerwood School. She married John Golaiy on October 23, 1952 and
they had four sons, John, Gordon, Allan and Raymond. Jean and John lived on John's parents' farm
until Vendel and Ethel moved into Whitewood in 1962, leaving them the farm. John and Jean sold
the last 30 acres of the farm in June of 2013 and moved into Whitewood, and John passed away
shortly after.
Jean was a hard worker. She worked on the farm as well at the Whitewood Hotel while raising their
four boys. She loved her large garden and her flowers, and spent many hours picking and canning
the fruits and vegetables every fall. She loved to visit and always had a pot of coffee on for family
and friends to enjoy. Jean could often be found at the dining room table doing her many different
handicrafts, such as crocheting, knitting, beading and quilting, just to name a few. After John died,
Jean enjoyed going to Archie's for coffee and a good meal. She participated in many different
activities in town and was active in the Roman Catholic Church.
Jean will be forever in our hearts and lovingly remembered by her family: sons Gord (Ina) and
Raymond; brother-in-law Vendel Golaiy; sisters-in-law Liz Vargo and Marlene Johnson;
grandchildren and great-grandchildren Vicki Day and her two children, Mark Golaiy and his three
children, Melissa Golaiy, Tiffany Chapman and Rachelle Golaiy; and all her nieces and nephews and
their families.
The family wishes to thank to everyone who took the time to visit with Jean and drive her to her
appointments. We really appreciate your kindness. Special thanks to the staff at the Moosomin
hospital for the wonderful care given to Jean. Thanks to Matthews Funeral Home for arranging the
graveside service which was held June 9, 2016 at the Whitewood Cemetery. Special thanks to Father
Deyre Azcuna for leading us in the service of celebration of Jean's life and to Ernie and Diane Veresh
for leading the hymns. We also to thank the CWL for providing lunch and to all who phoned and
sent cards.
