Obituary for Nancy Elizabeth Ness (Green)

Nancy Elizabeth Ness passed away on July 28, 2012 at the St. Paul Nursing Home, Melville, SK at the age of 88 years. Nancy was born to Jethro and Elizabeth Green in Cardiff, Wales on October 23, 1923. At the age of four Nancy immigrated to Canada when her family settled in Saskatoon, SK. Nancy excelled in school and played on the high school basketball team. She graduated from St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. It was at the hospital that she met her future husband and lifetime love, Ben Ness, who was a patient there. Ben and Nancy were married in 1947.Nancy stayed home to raise her two daughters Dianne and Colleen while actively volunteering in the community. She later returned to nursing at the Yorkton Union Hospital. Nancy retired at 55 to spend winters in Weslaco, Texas where she displayed her athleticism and competitive spirit at masters swim meets and shuffleboard tournaments. Summers were spent at the cabin at Sunnyside Beach where Nancy swam daily between Victoria and Labour Day, gardened, baked, and relished playing with and teaching her grandchildren. Nancy loved children and viewed each of her four grandchildren as special and uniquely gifted.Nancy had a quick wit, an independent spirit and a strongly held sense of justice. She stood up and spoke up for what she believed in. Nancy was a strong believer in education and was very proud that her daughters and each of her four grandchildren completed university. Nancy long regretted that university had not been an option for her in her time. She was predeceased by her husband Ben, her parents Jethro and Elizabeth Green and her brother George Green. Nancy will always be remembered by daughters Dianne (Rein) Tichelaar and Colleen (Joe) Schommer; grandchildren Rianna (Chris) French, Garnett (Robyn) Schommer, Paul (Lindsay Acheson) Tichelaar and Clark Schommer; great grandchildren Sean and Ellyson French; and her nieces and nephew.Heartfelt thanks to Jen, Wanda and all present and past staff of Bethany Way at st. paul Lutheran Home for their loving supporting to Nancy and our family throughout her illness. At Nancy’s request, a private family internment has taken place. Please remember Nancy by doing an act of kindness.
