Obituary for Shirley Eileen Yathon (Penner)

Shirley Yathon of Melville passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the age of 83 years.Shirley Eileen was born October 8, 1928 in the Langham district to Cornelius and Rose (nee Boese) Penner. She grew up on a farm in the Langham area and was the eldest of three girls. Shirley moved to Saskatoon at an early age while the rest of her family moved east to Niagara Falls. In Saskatoon she found employment at St. Paul’s Hospital and Quaker Oats. She roomed with her good friend, Eleanora. Eleanora, being the good friend she was, introduced Shirley to her handsome brother Rudy. Rudy and Shirley fell in love and married on April 16, 1949, a life change for her as she now became a farmer’s wife. Shirley and Rudy took over the Yathon farm where they raised their children. They worked hard to support their growing family. Shirley could be found in the kitchen everyday; with a smudge of flour on her nose, one knew she was making bread, noodles or perogies. But in spite of her hard work, she still found time to do the things she loved. She joined bowling leagues and became well known for her humour and wit. She was always quick with the sharp one-liners. Shirley was well known for her good nature, and her signature laugh could be picked out in a crowded room. Shirley loved her family dearly. One of her favourite pastimes was knitting. Countless mittens, slippers, toques and scarves she made for her family, friends and the Thrift Shop, where she volunteered in her later years. She loved a good card game and would stay up into the wee hours just to finish a game. She loved her flowers, especially roses, carnations and violas. Shirley cherished everything she received from her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids; she kept her mementos in a steamer trunk. Shirley gave to us all a piece of her that will live in our hearts forever. She was loved and will be dearly missed.Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Cornelius and Rose (nee Boese) Penner; her husband Rudy; a daughter, Brenda Jane; a sister, Betty (John) Penney; and a brother-in-law, Doug Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory: five children, Terry Cherney, Owen (Rhoda) Yathon, Loni (Brian) Brooks, Wrenell (Thomas) Streisel and Enid (Kevin) Dales; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Everett (Kim), Matthew and Andrew; Kim (Vic), Theresa (daughters Chelsey and Caitlyn), Cory and Alyssia; Travis (Kristen and their son Jayce) and Michael; her sister, Iona Smith; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
